The project of the ship was developed by the Central Technical Bureau of the Ministry of River Fleet of the RSFSR in 1947.
A series of pleasure motor ships "Moskvich" (projects 515, 544, 544M) was produced from 1949 to 1954 at the Moscow ship repair and shipbuilding plant (MSSZ). Motor ships of project 544 were also built later, for many years, at different factories of the USSR (for example, in Kherson). The motor ships of the Kherson construction received the designation "type PT", although in fact they did not differ in any way from the Moscow "Muscovites" and were built according to the same project (project 544). More than five hundred motor ships "Moskvich" were built.

"Muscovites" did not receive their own names, for their identification a combination of the letter M and the serial number of the vessel, for example, M-270, was used. In the nineties, some "Muscovites", sold to a private owner, received their own names.

Motor ships of this type were operated mainly as pleasure and excursion ships, as well as in the mode of public transport. And many of these vessels are currently in service. Now they are often the property of private companies and, having been refurbished accordingly, are used for corporate parties and other similar events.

Modifications.

In addition to Moscow, ships of this type were built in Kherson, Tyumen, in the villages of Samus near Tomsk and Listvyanka on Lake Baikal, as well as in Blagoveshchensk, Bobruisk (Belarus), and Kaunas (Lithuania). The ships of the Kherson, Samus and Annunciation buildings were designated "type PT" (for example, "PT-150"), although they were essentially no different from the Moscow "Moskvichs" and were built according to the same project (project 544). Tyumen "Muscovites" were designated by the letter "T". Bobruisk-built ships were designated with the letter "C". Lithuanian ships of project 544 were assigned their own names. To improve safety, portholes were installed on some "Moskvichs" of Siberian and Far Eastern buildings instead of saloon windows.

Vessels with the designation "PT" should be distinguished from open vessels for crossings of the project 792.

In Bobruisk, they specialized in the production of a shallow-draft modification of "Moskvich" for rivers and lakes in Belarus and Ukraine. Vessels of this type can be found in Vinnitsa ("Lyalya Ratushna" and NI Pirogov "), Ternopil Lake (" Hero of Dancers "), in Grodno (" Olga Solomova "), etc.

In the then Leningrad, a slightly modified version of" Muscovites "On a similar hull, featuring a different superstructure with a reduced height. These ships had the designation" L "(for example, L-14) and are known as the" Leningradets "type, project 564. Unlike" Moskvichs "," Leningraders "did not have open decks. "Muscovites" have access to the berth above the engine room, and "Leningraders"
