100th Anniversary of the heroic defence of Port Arthur

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Mar 13, 2021 2:04 am

For the 100th Anniversary of the Heroic Defence of Port Arthur, Russia issued in 2004 a miniature sheet of 10R. Many Russian warships have been depicted on the ms but not one is identified.

Port Arthur is the main base of the Russian Pacific Fleet and the headquarters of Russian troops in Northeast China in the early 19th century, located on the Liaodong Peninsula (China). On the night of January 27, 1904, the Japanese fleet, without declaring war, attacked the Russian squadron on the outer roadstead of Port Arthur, knocking out the battleships RETVIZAN, TSAREVICH, and the cruiser PALLADA. This was the beginning of the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. The direct struggle for Port Arthur began in late July - early August 1904, when the Japanese army, which landed on the Liaodong Peninsula, approached the outer contours of the fortress. The battle for Port Arthur, which lasted for about a year, ended with the surrender of the fortress to the enemy on the orders of General A.M. Stoessel, who led the defense.
