Classical Novels of Chinese Literature - Romance of the Three Kingdoms”

Introduction
At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, warlords rose to power, resulting in a tripartite division of the land known as the Three Kingdoms era. Novelist LUO Guanzhong of the period from late Yuan to early Ming dynasties drew ideas from this dramatic era and created an epic historical novel in chapters – the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Its well-knit plot with thrilling twists and turns, enriched with domination schemes and strategies and enlivened by characters with distinct personalities, made this a classic Chinese literature of all time. Adopting the paintings created by the renowned artist Mr TUNG Pui-sun for the novel, Hongkong Post issues a set of six stamps and two stamp sheetlets titled “Classical Novels of Chinese Literature – Romance of the Three Kingdoms” presenting eight of the popular scenes, namely The Oath of the Peach Garden, A Notion of Heroes over Warm Wine, Escorting Sisters-in-law over a Thousand Miles, Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage, Zhao Yun Saving the Young Lord, Empty Fort Stratagem, The Arrow through the Halberd and Borrowing Arrows with Straw Boats, enabling us to revel in the appreciation of the remarkable moments of this epic novel in the miniature wonders.

$20 stamp sheetlet - Borrowing Arrows with Straw Boats (Chapter 46)
To cope with the unreasonable task of making a hundred thousand arrows assigned by Zhou Yu.

Zhuge Liang fetched twenty swift boats with bundles of straw lashed to the sides and sailed them close to Cao Cao’s naval base by the river bank on a foggy night. Soldiers onboard beat the drums and let off a battle cry. The night proved very misty along the river and Cao Cao refrained from sending troops to ward off any decoy. Instead, he summoned tens of thousands of archers and crossbowmen to shoot down into the river to guard against a landing. With arrows raining down from the bank, the boats were bristled with arrows. Zhuge Liang accomplished the task unscathed and obtained more than a hundred thousand arrows with this ingenious coup.
