1999 - Commemorative Emission of the “750 Years of the Conquest of the Algarve”

The stamp shows the Portuguese cavalry and the escaping Moors in two boats from the coast of the Algarve. The vessels are wooden one mast vessels square-rigged, not any information on the type.

Allegorical drawing by Luís Filipe de Abreu.

ALGARVE - It is the Territory that took the longest time to come into possession of the Portuguese Crown. The Province Algarve located in the south of the country has an area of 5,018 square kilometers and a somewhat historic difference from the rest of the Territory! The Moors were in the Algarve until 1250, when D. Afonso III with the important help of Mestre de Santarém D. Paio Correia dominated them at all. Previously, D. Sancho I and D. Sancho II had already vibrated deep blows, taking respectively Silves (1189), and Tavira and Cacela (1239). The conquest carried out by D. Afonso III raised several incidents with Castile due to the fact that Rei Mouro de Biela donated the Lands of the Algarve to the son of D. Fernando II de Castela, the donation made outside his rights. The disagreements ended up being totally resolved in 1263 when the King of Portugal was married to D. Beatriz, Prince D. Dinis was born, and finally, in the Convention of Badajoz (1267) the effective possession of the Algarve was recognized to D. Afonso III
