The Lighthouse keeper daughter is rowing back to the Casquet

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed May 19, 2021 8:43 pm

The lighthouse keeper Lucas Houguez lived on the Casquets with his family for about 18 years, but due to health problems, he was later transferred to Alderney.
But before this transfer took place his daughter was visiting the family on a neighboring island, but according to Swinburne's Les Casquettes she couldn't get over life on that island, she said the busy world is full of problems and noise after which she left for her lonely island of Casquets where peace and tranquillity reigned.

Algernon Swinburne's poem, Les Casquets is based on the Houguez family who actually lived on the island for 18 years. The Houguez were originally from Alderney, and the poem describes their life on Les Casquets. The daughter falls in love with a carpenter from Alderney, but moving to his island, finds life there too busy. She finds the "small bright streets of serene St Anne" and "the sight of the works of men" too much, and returns to Les Casquets.

Alderney's 26p stamp shows us when she rowed back to Casquets Island.
