ICE MEN - IRISH ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jun 27, 2021 9:26 pm

Irishmen were at the heart of Antarctic expeditions during what is regarded as the ‘golden age’ of such missions in the 1800s and early 1900s. It is fitting therefore that we salute these courageous explorers by issuing four stamps to highlight the role played by eight Irishmen, who were members of various challenging and pioneering expeditions.

Two of these stamps depict vessels.

Edward Bransfield https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bransfield shows us the brig WILLIAMS.

Francis Crozier https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Crozier The stamp shows us two vessels, most probably the HMS EREBUS and HMS TERROR. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6347

It looks like the ship on the stamp is partly designed after the vessel in the foreground of the painting, which I believe is the HMS EREBUS. The other ship in the background on the left must be the TERROR.
The painting was made by the British artist James Wilson.
