VIII ANNIVERSARY OF THE WALKING ROUTE OF SAINT ANTHONY OF PA

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Jul 19, 2021 9:01 pm

The Vatican issued one miniature sheet which shows us the route which San Antonio of Padua took from Milazzo, Sicily after the shipwreck of his ship on the coast of Sicily to Padua in northern Italy. Two ships are depicted on the stamp one in the Adriatic Sea, the other most probably the shipwrecked ship on the north coast of Sicily. Have not any information on the ships.

800 years have passed since Saint Anthony of Padua was shipwrecked on the coast of Sicily and from his first meeting with Saint Francis of Assisi.
For Fernando Martins de Bulhões, the future Saint Anthony, the choice to become a friar stemmed from the meeting with some of the first Franciscans, five Italian missionaries leaving for Morocco where they suffered martyrdom. Inflamed by their example, he wanted to follow in their footsteps. He too left immediately for Morocco, but when he arrived in Africa he became seriously ill. At this point, he would have liked to return to Portugal, but in the spring of 1221, a furious storm forced his ship to change course and land in Sicily where he was welcomed by the friars of Messina, who made him regain his lost vigor and announced that Francis, the founder of the Order, had summoned them to Assisi for the great gathering of all the friars of the time, called the Chapter of Mats. Antonio then left, walking up Italy until reaching Assisi, where for the first time he met St. Francis. Since then, animated by the Spirit, he has made himself known and appreciated as a great man of the Gospel and charity, a friend of God and friend of men, especially of the poorest, so much so that he still remains today in everyone's heart, known in every corner of the world, with the name of Sant'Antonio di Padova. The anniversary leaflet, created by the illustrator Bimba Landmann, depicts in value the Saint holding the Child Jesus, and on the right a stylization of Italy where his path is traced from Milazzo to Padua. Especially of the poorest, so much so that it still remains in everyone's heart today, known in every corner of the world with the name of St. Anthony of Padua.
