“juanga” or “boanga” a watercraft used in the Philippines. She is a heavily armed vessel especially of the Iranun (or Illanun) pirates of Jolo, adopted by the Spanish during the 17th century. Planking added to a dugout keel piece; sharp overhanging ends or tall stems; top strakes extended beyond the bow as 2 wings; steep rise to the floors. The cabin extended out over the quarters. Breastwork at bow-mounted 2 swivel guns, and a long gun projected through the breastwork. May have had double outriggers. Two or 4 quarter rudders. Rowed double- or triple-banked with oarsmen pulling a single oar; used as many as 34 oars per side. Stepped 2 – 3 strikable mast that set wide lugsails. The crew of 50-300 rowers and soldiers.
Reported lengths 16 – 40m; e.g. length 25m, beam 2.5m, depth 2m.
