EMERAUDE (604) submarine

Built as a nuclear submarine by DNC in Cherbourg for the French Navy.
04 March 1981 laid down.
12 April 1986 launched as the ÉMERAUDE (S604) one of the Rubis-class.
Displacement: 2400 ton surfaced, 2600 ton submerged. Dim. 73.6 x 7.6 x 6.4m (draught on surface.)
Propulsion: Pressurised water K48 nuclear reactor (48 MW); 2 turbo-alternators ; 1 electric engine (7 MW); one propeller. Speed over 25 knots.
1 diesel-alternators SEMT Pielstick 8 PA 4V 185 SM; one auxiliary engine, 5 MW.
Range 8,500 nautical miles.
Test depth over 300 m
Complement: 10 officers, 52 warrant officers and 8 petty officers.
Armament: 4 torpedo tubes of 533 mm which can launch a total of 14 F17 mod 2 anti-ship and anti-submarine torpedoes or SM 39 missiles with change of medium against surface targets.
15 September 1988 commissioned. Homeport Toulon.
ÉMERAUDE (S604): She is a tactical nuclear submarine of the French Navy. The name goes back to an unfinished submarine class from the late 1930s and a submarine class from the First World War and translated means emerald. The ÉMERAUDE (S 604) is the third submarine in the Rubis class.
On March 30, 1994, during an anti-submarine exercise, an explosion occurred in the engine room of the ÉMERAUDE, killing 10 crew members.
The nuclear submarine was modernized between May 1994 and December 1995 to the technical standard of the Améthyste class.
In June 2009, the ÉMERAUDE was sent to the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast to use its sonar equipment to locate the flight recorder of Air France Flight 447.
In February 2021, the submarine successfully concluded a passage of the South China Sea.

Although this edition was authorized by the Niger postal administration, it was not sold in Niger, but only distributed to the novelty trade by the Nigerian philatelic agency.
