BALEARIC ISLANDS MAP OF 1563

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Sep 08, 2021 9:34 pm

This stamp is designed after a map from an atlas by Diego Homen of 1563 which shows us part of the Mediterranean with the Balearic Islands, on the left is a vessel depict most probably from that time, but not more details on the ship.
The first inhabitants of the Balearic were the Phoenicians. Then came the Greeks and Romans. After all, the Moors ruled for 500 years. In 1229 King Jaime I conquered the islands

Diego Homen was the Portuguese cartographer whose most works are preserved and whose known production is located between the years 1557 and 1576. Insular Spain is a postal series in a clear reference to our two archipelagos, the Balearic and the Canary Islands. The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in the Mediterranean formed by two groups of islands, the Gymnastics (Mallorca, Menorca, and Cabrera) and the Pitiusas (Ibiza and Formentera) as well as numerous islets. They are located about 300 kilometers west of the peninsula. There you can find the easternmost point of Spain, Cabo del Espero, on the island of Menorca. Both archipelagos are communicated with the peninsula by different means of air and maritime transport, their inhabitants enjoying special "resident" treatment in the price of their trips.
