CANARY ISLANDS MAP BY MATTEO PRUNES

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Sep 11, 2021 2:39 am

Spain issued in 1981 two stamps of which the 12p stamp shows us a map of the Canary Islands, the stamp is designed after a chart made by Matteo Prunes (1532-1594), which also depict a: compass rose and a galleon, see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11966
The chart is dated 1563.

Navicula gives by this stamp:
Canary Islands: ... archipelago off the west coast of Africa (Spanish = 'Islas Canarias' = islands of dogs, after the blood dogs bred there). Of the 12 mountainous volcanic islands, the 7 largest are inhabited: Hierro, Palma, Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The islands were known to the Phoenicians and the Arabs. The Spaniard Luis de la Cerda was crowned King of the Canaries by the Pope in 1344. It was not until the 15th century that the islands were gradually conquered by the Spaniards.

Wikipedia has on Matteo Prunes
Matteo Prunes (Majorca, 1532 - 1594 ) was a Spanish cartographer, also known as Mateo or Matheus.
Biography
Matteo was a member of the Prunes, a Majorcan family of cartographers who began his business with Juan in 1532 and which was active until 1631.
Prunes carried out its activity in the second half of the 16th century in Mallorca. In one of his maps of 1553 appears the ghost island of Fixland on which Frislanda is based, which appeared in the map of Zeno published five years later.
His maps are distinguished by the fine design, the red and blue chromatism, and the sobriety of the decorations.
His son Vincenzo continued the family tradition.
