Built as a wooden screw corvette by the Woolwich Dockyard for the Royal Navy.
1866 Keel laid down
14 July 1869 launched under the name HMS THALIA.
Tonnage 1.459 ton (bm), 2.216 ton displacement. Dim. 200.0 bpp x 40.4 x 16.7ft.
Armament 2 – 7inch MLR, 4 – 64pdr MLR.
Powered by horizontal single expansion steam engine, 1.597 ihp., manufactured by Robert Napier & Sons, speed 11.1 knots.
Capacity for 230 tons coal bunker
Crew 200.
March 1870 completed. Building cost £69.024.

One of the Juno class after a design of Edward Reed, primarily intended for trooping. Only two of this class were built. Sister HMS JUNO.
Ship rigged with a telescopic funnel and hoisting screw.
THALIA was the last ship built at the Woolwich Dockyard.

1876 Rearmed, the 7 inch guns removed and two extra 64 pdr. added.
October 1886 troopship.
1885 In Tristan da Cunha the potato crop had failed, due to poor weather, and the men despite poor weather were forced to intercept the WEST RIDING to barter for provision. The whaleboat with on board 15 men of the 18 men on the island, put out to sea, but was never seen again.
After the disaster with the whaleboat, the Rev. E.H. Dodgson did ask the colonial office to be sent back to the island.
End May 1886 HMS THALIA sailed from Devonport bound for Australia, she had orders to take the Rev. E.H.Dodgson and a small amount of cargo to Tristan da Cunha. The cargo consisted of clothing, flour, seed potatoes, rat poison, terrier dogs, and mongoose. 05 August 1886 the HMS THALIA under command of Capt. Day. H. Bosanquet arrived off the island, cargo and Rev. Dodgson landed safely. When the HMS THALIA arrived on the island there were 97 souls living, when leaving the THALIA took 27 islanders to Capetown, reducing the entire population of the island to 75 souls.

Feb. 1915 depot ship.
16 September 1920 sold to Rose Street Foundry for scrap.
