WYOMING USS (SSSBN 742)

Built as a ballistic missile submarine, nuclear powered by General Electric Boat Division, Groton, Conn, USA for the USA Navy.
27 January 1990 keel laid down.
15 July 1995 launched under the name USS WYOMING (SSBN 742), sponsored by Mrs. Monika B. Ownes, she is the fourth ship in the USA Navy who carried the name WYOMING and named after the 44th state of the Union. She is one of the Ohio class.
Displacement 17.033 surfaced, 18.750 submerged. Dim. 170.7 x 12.8 x 11.1m. (draught surfaced).
Nuclear powered, steam turbine 59.188hp, two screws, speed 20+ knots.
Diving depth 300m
Armament 24 Trident launchers I and II, MK-48 torpedoes, four 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 17 Officers and 140 enlisted.
Home base, Naval Submarine Bas, Kings Bay, Georgia.
13 July 1996 commissioned, under command of Capt. Randall D. Preston.


These classes provide the sea-based “leg” of the triad of U.S. strategic deterrent forces, the 18 ships of this class carry 50 percent of the total U.S. warheads.
The missiles are not pre-set on a target when this submarines are going on patrol, but are capable of rapidly targeting their missiles should need arise, using secure and constant at-sea communication links.

Designed for extended patrols, and to decrease the time in port for replenishment, three large logistics hatches are fitted in the hull to provide large diameter resupply and repair openings. Through these large hatches the crew can rapidly transfer supply pallets, equipment, replacement modules and machinery components, to keep the time in port down.
