QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 (1967)

Post by shipstamps » Mon Jan 12, 2009 3:12 pm

RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 (QE2) is a Cunard Line ocean liner named after the earlier Cunard Liner RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH, which in turn was named after Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Queen consort of George VI.
She was the flagship of the line from 1969 until succeeded by RMS QUEEN MARY 2 in 2004.

Built in Clydebank, Scotland, she was considered the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners prior to the construction of the QUEEN MARY 2. Before she was refitted with a diesel power plant in 1986, she was also the last oil-fired passenger steamship to cross the Atlantic in scheduled liner service. During almost 40 years of service, the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 has travelled the world and now operates predominantly as a cruise ship, sailing out of Southampton, England.
She will be retired from active service in late 2008, to become a floating hotel at Palm Jumeirah, Dubai.
The ship has a gross tonnage (GT) of 70.327 tons and is 294 meter long, she has a top speed of 32.5 knots (60.2 km/h) using her original steam turbine power plant, which was increased to 34 knots (63 km/h) when she was re-engined with a diesel electric power plant.
The QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 was not named after Queen Elizabeth II, who launched her in 1967, but after the previous Queen Elizabeth, which in turn was named for the Queen Mother.
This as Roman numerals are always used for monarchs, the Arabic numeral “2” is used in the ship’s name to distinguish her from the monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Copied from Malta Post leaflet.

She is on Malta 2008 3.00 Euro sg ? scott? And also depict on the First Day cover issued by Malta in 2008.

The stamp recalls two events of the 1960s - Bobby Moore, the victorious England Captain, collecting the solid gold Jules Rimet World Cup trophy on July 30, 1966, and the launch of
the liner QUEEN ELIZABETH on September 20, 1967. But in the margin of the block of 10 of the stamps is the wrong date for the launch - May 20,1967, instead of September 20, 1967.

The inscription showing the wrong date for the launch of QE2 is on the 47p sheet of 10 stamps not on the miniature sheet
