Islander

Post by shipstamps » Fri Jan 09, 2009 7:08 pm

The current 12 cents Christmas Island stamp showing Flying Fish Cove, also depicts a small steamer in the background. This vessel is the Islander, a twin-screw ship, built in 1929 by the Grangemouth Dockyard Co., Ltd., at Grangemouth. A vessel of 1,619 gross tons, she was at first owned by the original Christmas Island Phosphate Co., Ltd. and was transferred to the British Phosphate Commission in 1949. Obsolescence finally forced the Islander, which was engined by Plenty and Sons, Ltd., of Newbury, into retirement in March 1960.
