WESTWARD HO

Post by shipstamps » Sun Dec 28, 2008 4:37 pm

The Faroes Island issued three stamps on 09 September 1984 which take their motif from old time fishing.
The 2.80Kr stamp depicts the well preserves fishing ketch WESTWARD HO with fishing No TN54. from Tórshavn.

Built in 1884 by Leaver & Co., Grimsby as a fishing vessel.
Launched as the WESTWARD HO.
Tonnage 88.51 gross, 34.7 net, dim. 77 x 22.8 x 10.6ft.
Original built with one mast, in 1925 converted to a ketch rigged fishing vessel. Sail area around 230 sq. ft.

When steam trawlers around 1900 took over in Great Britain the fishery some of the sailing ketches were sold overseas.
The WESTWARD HO was bought by the Faroe merchant Thomsen of Suderøy in 1895.
Thereafter used for fishing for cod in the domestic waters around Iceland, Greenland the Rockall and Bear Islands with a crew between 20 and 24 men.
1925 Fitted out with a small steering house and a small engine placed.

During World War II she carried fish on ice from Iceland and the Faroe Islands to Aberdeen.
After the war again used for fishing, during springtime for cod and in the autumn for herring.

1961 Her engine worn out and she was laid up, and that should have been the end of her career, but she was lucky, in 1962 a society was formed “Sluppen” to save her.
Her steering house was removed and she was restored in 1968, and her appearance is almost the same as when she was built except the rigging, which still showed her under ketch rig.
Fitted out with a new Mercedes diesel of 90hp.

2005 She is again restored.
Takes lately part in many Tall Ships races.
