The passenger vessel was built under yard No. 199 by VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft, Wismar East Germany for the Freier Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (FDGB) (Free German Workers Association). Managed by VEB Seereederei, Rostock.
28 November 1959 contract was signed and keel laid down.
25 June 1960 launched under the name FRITZ HECKERT, named after Fritz Heckert (1884-1936) a leader in the German workers movement.
Tonnage 7.363 gross, 3.401 net, 1.923 dwt. Dim. 141.31 x 17.58 x 5.50m. (draught).
Powered by two gas turbines 5.400 shp. and two 8-cyl. diesel engines, manufactured by Rostock Diesel, 4.600 bhp. Twin screws, speed 17 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 359 passengers in one class and 161 crew.
15 April 1961 completed.

She was built with funds collected by members of the trade union movement, for use as a vacation ship by party members.
Used in the Baltic and Norwegian Fjords during the summer season and in the winter made cruises in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

This set of stamps shows the ship’s plan, a model, the ship on the stocks, and as she appeared when completed.
01 May 1961 sailed for her maiden voyage under command of Capt. Willi Leidic.
End 1970 out of service for technical reasons.
During her life as a passenger ship she made calls at 59 ports, and visited 24 countries.
Transported more as 63.000 passengers, and steamed 494.345 miles.

1971 In use as a stationary floating school-ship for members of the merchant marine.

02 May 1972 sold to VEB Schifsbau as an accommodation ship by the Volkswerft shipyard at Stralsund, not renamed.
15 April 1982 sold to VEB Deutfracht Seereederei, Rostock.
1986 Employed as an accommodation ship by workers on a nuclear work at Griefswald.
1991 Sold to Gulf Offshore Engineering, Hamburg and converted in a floating hotel.
Thereafter used in the United Arab Emirates as hotel ship.
1994 Sold to unknown buyers, renamed in GULF FANTASY, in use as a hotel vessel at Dubai.
1999 Sold to Indian shipbreakers.
04 March 1999 arrived at Mumbai (Bombay) for breaking up.
