Rhadames

Post by shipstamps » Wed Dec 10, 2008 12:49 pm

The Republic of Dominica has issued a single 7c. stamp for Merchant Marine Day, the design showing the Rhadames, one of the three steamers of the Flota Mercante Dominicana (the other pair comprise the Angelita and Fundacion). The company operates a weekly service, with sailings every Friday, between New York, Ciudad Trujillo, Sanchez and Puerto Plata. The Rhadames was built by Franco Tosi, at Taranto, Italy, in 1947, as the Rosellin of the " Navigazione Dani" Soc. per Azioni, of Genoa. She was bought by the Flota Mercante Dominicana in 1953 and renamed Rhadames. A vessel of 3,030 gross tons, on dimensions of 305.1ft x 40 ft. x 27.4 ft., she is fitted for oil fuel, has a cruiser stern, and a Tosi steam turbine with double-reduction gearing to a single-screw shaft.
