WILLEM BARENTSZ / ENKHUIZEN

Post by shipstamps » Wed Dec 03, 2008 5:10 pm

The sheet issued by the Dutch PTT in the series of Mooi Nederland (Beautiful Netherland) issued in 2006, Enkhuizen, showed us different types of sea, fishing and sailing vessels from different centuries, which connect Enkhuizen with the Zuiderzee now IJsselmeer. Enkhuizen got 650 year ago her municipal town rights.

You can see the stern of a 17/18 century VOC ship, the ship is designed after a 18e century drawing named “Nearing of the homeport”, the same ship is also depict on the bottle.

Left under a herring buss (Dutch name buis) sailing out to the fishing grounds, after a painting of the painter Cornelis Bok. On the buss you can see the town-gate of Enkhuizen, De Drommedaris

The type dominated North Sea herring fishing in the 14th – 17th centuries, was made more efficient in the early 15th century by the use of a special designed net. In its various forms, the vessel endured until the mid-19th century. Some served armed convoy duties with the fishing fleet (the buisconveyer) and some carried cargo in the off-season.
The type was carvel planked had rounded or square sterns, bluff bow, curved stem and nearly perpendicular sides. Strong sternpost supported a heavy rudder, which came up inboard. Sometimes small decks fore and aft, the larger types fully decked.
Two and three mast, with square sails, later mostly rigged as a two mast hooker, which left the forward area free for net handling.
Crew 8 – 15 persons. Length average in the 17th century 14 and 22 meter. The buss on the sheet has a rounded stern and stem.

The green painted ship above the buss is the MD 3. which was built in 1883 for the Dutch Army and used by it Torpedo’s Corps, for laying of electric mines, and used as pilot and rescue vessel till 1923. I could not find under which name or number she was built but I believe she was not built as MD 3. The service was later taken over by the Dutch Royal Navy.

Then used as fishing vessel on the waters and streams of the Province Zealand, MD is the fishing number of Middelharnis, and most probably between 1923-1970 she was fishing from this port.

She is now sailing in the waters of the IJsselmeer, Waddenzee and Friesian lakes under the name MD 3 under command of shipper Henk Hortensius with passengers; he is also the owner of the MD 3.
The MD 3 is managed by De Zeilvaart Enkhuizen.
Dim. 21 x 5.50 x 1.50m. (draught)
She carried still the same mast as when she was built and carried under full sail 195 m².

The three ladies in the small boat are ladies which are working for the design company of the stamp, Ping-pong Design, and are practicing for the yearly tear-jerker festival in Enkhuizen.

The ship in front of the WILLEM BARENTSZ is a tjalk not a name given, but many are nowadays used as inland holiday vessel, and sailing with mostly groups of young people over the Dutch coastal and inland waters.

It are flat bottom vessels with rounded ends, the tjalk depict was used on the inland waterways and lakes of the Netherlands, first built of wood but later mostly of iron or steel.
Used for the carriage of all kinds of cargo.

The larger vessel is the 3 mast topsail schooner WILLEM BARENTSZ built in 1931 under the name LANDSORT for German account, where built and owner unknown so far by my. Can not find her under that name in any Lloyds Registry, so most probably used as an inland cargo vessel in Germany. The web-site http://www.willem-barentsz.nl/html/sche ... rmati.html gives that she was used as a coaster on the North Sea and Baltic.
1986 Sold to the Netherlands and converted in a 3 mast topsail schooner owned by Jeroen Mohrmann and used for daytrips with 100 persons around it IJsselmeer from Enkhuisen.
Dim. 49.70 x 6.10 x 1.80m.
Powered by 1 Mitsubishi diesel 300 hp.
Sail area 460m².

BOTTER is depict on the stamp, a decked wooden ship and about 400 years ago already in use as fishing vessels in the Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer) and North Sea till around 1966. One mast, leeboards.
The botter is still built but only for use as a pleasure yacht. More info is given on:

On all the ships are standing buildings, which are well known in Enkhuizen.
