Built under yard no 972 by the A.G. Weser Seebeck-Werft at Bremerhaven as a ro ro/passenger ferry for the North Sea Ferries Ltd.
13 Oct. 1973 launched under the name NORLAND, she was christened by Mrs. Hanna Adler wife of the owner of the Argo Reederei, Richard Adler & Sönne at Bremen, one of the shareholders of the company.
Tonnage 12.988 gross, 7.051 net, 3.800 dwt., dim. 153.02 x 25.20 x 7.60m., draught 6.22m.
Powered by two 16 cyl 4 S.C. SA oil engines manufactured by Stork-Werkspoor Diesel at Amsterdam, 18.000 shp., twin controllable pitch propeller, speed 18.5 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 1.243 passengers. Space for 134 x 40 ft trailers.
07 June 1974 delivered to owners. Building cost 80 million Dutch guilders.

Used for the ferry service between Hull and Europoort, near Rotterdam.
31 March 1975 P&O Ferries appointed as manager.

17 April 1982 requisitioned for the service for the Falkland Task Force conversion began in Hull before she was converted to a troopship at Portsmouth Dockyard. Arrived there 22 April and sailed 25 April after fitted out with two helipads, freshwater generating plant, and modern communication equipment, Satnav and Satcom. Her living spaces were modified.
26 April sailed out from Portsmouth under command of Capt. Don Ellerby, with on board 800 men of the Second Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. Made a call at Ascension before sailing to the Falklands, where she arrived off San Carlos on 21 May. Her troops were disembarked and were in the first wave and on shore within three hours.
She came a few times under fire of enemy aircraft and on 24 May she was showered by debris from a shot down Skyhawk.
She sailed thereafter with Guards and Gurkhas to South Georgia, after disembarking these troops, she embarked Argentineans POW’s, which she later took to Montevideo.
When she returned to the Falkland the Argentineans surrendered and after arrival she took 2.047 POW’s to Puerto Madryn.
She left the Falklands homeward bound on 23 June, she was released from service on 02 Feb. 1983.
After an extensive refit at Immingham she returned to her service between Hull and Europoort on 1 April 1983.
07 June 1985 she grounded on the Maasvlakte after trying to avoid the German coaster SABINE when outward bound from Rotterdam for Hull. She got considerable bottom damage and flooding. Was towed back to Rotterdam for repairs. The repair took almost 10 weeks,
Her builder at Bremerhaven lengthened her in April 1987 with a midsection of 20.25m.
Tonnage after lengthening 26.290 gross, 15.555 net, 5.558 dwt, dim.173.25 x 25.20 x 7.60m. (draught).
Passenger accommodation 881persons and cargo space for 179 x 40 ft trailers or 500 cars.
Returned to service 27 June 1987. Thereafter used in the service between Hull and Zeebrugge.

After 27 years of service between England and Holland and Belgium she made her final departure from Hull for Zeebrugge on 27 February 2002. When she for the last time passed the King George lock into the Humber, her passenger compliment swelled by guests including the former governor of the Falkland Islands Sir Rex Hunt and his wife and some of the former crew on board when she was heading for the South Atlantic in 1982.
After arriving in Zeebrugge and disembarking passengers, she was renamed SNAV SICILLIA and sailed for the Mediterranean, for a passenger and vehicle service between Naples and Palermo.
She is now managed by SNAV Aliscafi, Italy. Marine News 2002/614 gives her name as SNAV SICILIA and that she was bought by Strup International S.A., Panama.
05 March 2002 sailed from Vlisingen (most probably after dry-docking) bound for Genoa.
25 May 2002 in the service from Naples to Palermo. Registered in the U.K.
2006 http://www.equasis.org gives IMO No. 7333822, call sign GUBH.
Owned by Continental Ferries, United Kingdom and managed by Alisnav both in Naples, Italy.
She sails now under the flag of Portugal, with homeport Madeira.

April 2007 Sold to Jetmarine Line SRL, Naples Italy, with homeport Naples, not renamed.
2008 Still in the service between Naples to Palermo.

01 October 2010 laid up at Palermo.
The same month sold to Indian shipbreakers.
13 October 2010 sailed from Palermo via Jeddah to Alang, India.
31 October 2011 arrived at Alang.
11 November 2010 beached at Alang.

She is the vessel in the foreground of the stamp; the other is the liner CANBERRA, the other stamp shows the aircraft carrier HMS HERMES, see index for her details.
