This stamp shows the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1st 1898. The USS Olympia, a protected cruiser under the command of Commodore Dewey, shown leading the American Fleet into action and blowing up the Spanish flagship Reina Christina. Astern of the Olympia is the USS. Baltimore. The engagement resulted in the whole of the, Spanish squadron in Manila Bay being sunk or burned, while the Americans lost neither a ship nor a man. The Olympia, which was launched in 1892 and cost £359,200 to build, had a displacement of 5,800 tons, a length of 340ft., a beam of 5311, a draught of 21.6ft., an ihp of 13,500, a main armament of four Sin 10 Sin and 14 6pdr. guns, and a speed of 21 knots.
