The motorship Maui Pomare, named after Sir Maui Pomare (1876-1930). who was a Maori elected to the New Zealand Parliament and who on two occasions during his long Parliamentary career held the position at Minister for the Cook Islands. The Maui Pomare was launched by the Dublin Dockyard Co., on September 29, 1927 and was purchased by the New Zealand Government in order to open up a banana export trade from Western Samoa to New Zealand.
