Jean de Vienne (Admiral)

Post by shipstamps » Thu Nov 27, 2008 6:10 pm

Admiral Jean de Vienne and two of his ships are shown on a French stamp. He was made First Admiral of France in 1373, and was an antagonist of Britain in. the Hundred Years War. In 1377 he attacked various parts of the South Coast with a fleet of 35 ships and 13 galleys, and left the port of Rye in flames. In 1380 he attacked in turn the Isle of Wight, Jersey and Guernsey. He also took a prominent part in Mediterranean naval operations. It will be noticed that the ship next to the admiral has a rudder, the earliest vessel on stamps to show this important invention, although it was known 200 years earlier.
