Junks, Kuwana

Post by shipstamps » Fri Nov 21, 2008 6:27 pm

One of the most beautifully coloured stamps I have seen was issued by Japan on October 4, 1959, for the international "Letter Writing Week" and I am informed by Capt. K. Sano, master of the training ship Kaiwo Maru, that the design of this stamp is from the work of Hiroshige, an artist famous for his scenes of Japanese life. The stamp shows a reproduction of the artist's picture of the old ferry of Kuwana, near Nagoya, with old-fashioned Japanese fishing junks.
