SAMOA

She was built in 1883 as a wooden steamer by W. Peat, at Tomakin, N.S.W. Australia, for D.Sheehy at Sydney.
March 1883 launched under the name SOPHIA ANN.
Tonnage 112 gross, dim. 121.3 x 21.6 x 6.8ft.
Powered by a 157 hp engine, manufactured by R & J. Morrison & Bearley, at Onebygama, N.S.W.

11 July 1884 bought by the AG Deutsche Handels-und Plantagen-Ges. der Südsee Inseln.
Renamed SAMOA, and registered at Hamburg.
Sailed under command of the Captains E.Dallemann and H. Sechstroh.
27 July 1885 Sold to Hansemann at Berlin, same captains.
1 May 1889 ownership transferred to Neu Guinea Cie., Berlin.

17 Feb. 1890 Sold to J.Weston, Sydney, renamed SOPHIA ANN.

She was lost after leaving Ballina N.S.W. on a coastal voyage on 9 April 1908 when she lost her rudder, and went aground inside the river entrance.
The tug RESCUE went out to help her but also went ashore. Both vessels became total wrecks.
