Tentativa Feliz
To commemorate the first Portuguese settlement in Mocamedes, one of the principal towns of the colony of Angola, two stamps of the same design were issued on the centenary of the settlement in 1949. Mr. C. A. Woad, a Sea Breezes reader of Thingwall, Cheshire, kindly informs me that the sailing vessel depicted was named Tentativa Feliz, and that the first settlers, which she carried to Mocamedes, were Portuguese from Brazil.

Re: Tentativa Feliz
The TENTATIVE FELIZ carried 180 Portuguese settlers from Pernambuco (Recife), Brazil to Moçamedes, Angola in 1849 when it was decided to develop Angola as a Portuguese colony.
Of the TENTATIVE FELIZ is only known that she was a three masted barque rigged wooden hulled vessel.

23 May 1849 two ships left Recife, Brazil, the TENTATIVE FELIZ and the Portuguese brig rigged warship DOURO, with on board 180 settlers (116 men, 39 women and 25 children) under the leadership of Mr. Bernardino. On board were also equipment, provision and other necessaries to set up a new settlement in Angola.
During the voyage which took a long time due to advisory winds and long calms, also a bladder infection epidemic on board killed three adults and five children.
04 August, after a passage of 74 days the TENTATIVE FELIZ arrived at Moçamedes, where the settlers disembarked.
The fate of the TENTATIVE FELIZ is unknown.
