Turkey honoured one of its oldest steamships, the Bandirma, with a 60 kurus stamp showing a full colour reproduction of a painting of the vessel. She was built in 1886 as the Medway, by C. Connell and Company, Glasgow, for W. Sloan and Company, and was sold to Turkey in May 1926, the purchasers being the Administration de Nay. Vapeur Turque, who renamed her Bandirma .In 1938 she was acquired by T. C. Munalalat Vekaleti Deviet Denizyollariye Limanlari Isletme U.M., and was then renamed Ulgen. Gross tonnage was 929, net 483, and dimensions were: length 225 ft., breadth 32.1 ft. and draft 14.2ft. The tonnage was changed a number of times during her service, being given variously as 831, 905, and 870 tons. She was a well-deck type.
