Kismet

Post by shipstamps » Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:37 pm

This Turkish stamp shows the yacht Kismet, in which Mr&Mrs. Boro made a world tour, the voyage taking them two years, ten months and six days, the stamp being actually issued on the day of their return to the harbour of Istanbul in June 1968. The Kismet has an overall length of 35 ft. and weighs 10 tons. In addition to her sail area of 638 sq. ft. of canvas, the boat has a 20 h.p. oil engine.
The Kismet left Istanbul on August 22, 1965, passed through the Panama Canal on January 25, 1966, reaching Tahiti on July 11 1966 and Singapore 13 months later. There Mrs. Boro had to leave the yacht and return home to Turkey for an operation. She rejoined her husband in the Kismet on January 1, 1968, at Colombo. Unable to get through the Suez Canal, the Kismet went by overland trailer from Eilat, Israel, to the port of Asdot, on the Mediterranean, sailing from Asdot for home on April 4.
