Osterreich

Post by shipstamps » Sun Nov 09, 2008 8:28 am

The 64 gr. of the set depicts the Osterreich, a powerful lengthy 2-funnelled tug, shown against a background of the silhouetted dome of the Viennese Jubilee Church. She was built at Budapest, with a compound engine of 1,800 h.p. In 1931 she was converted to oil burning and her engines boosted to 2,500 h.p. Gutted by fire in 1944, she was taken the following year to the wharf at Domevburg near Vienna for rebuilding and was there confiscated by the Russians, afterwards entering service as the Stalingrad.
