ANNA

Post by shipstamps » Thu Nov 06, 2008 4:12 pm

The ship depict on this stamp issued by the Isle of Man is the ANNA built in Quebec in 1848. ANNA is a common name for ships, but I believe she is the ship built in 1848.
.
20 December 1850, ANNA sailed from Liverpool under Capt. Lawsons, arrived Port Adelaide 27 April 1851.
Lloyds Register of 1852 gives there is an ANNA belonging to Liverpool were she was owned by the Fielden Brothers.
Tonnage given as 1.018 tons old measurement and 1.098 tons new measurement, two decks and was felted and sheated in 1850.
Dim. 158.3 x 32.1 x 23.4ft (draught)
In the supplement section of the Lloyds Register of 1848 is given that she was built of oak, elm and hackmatack.
At that time she was under command of Capt. Capt Daveys and underway from Liverpool to New Orleans.
06 April 1852 sailed from Liverpool, with on board the Manx pioneer William Cain. Arrived Port Adelaide under command of Capt. Downward on 14 July 1852, and according the book “The Colonia Clippers” after a fast passage of 76 days, and she did belong to the Fox Line Packets.
By checking the book “Shipping Arrivals and Departures of South Australia”, is given ANNA ship 1.089 ton built in Quebec, launched 1849 and delivered 1849 under command of Captain James Moffat arrived 05 November 1852 (Adelaide) from Liverpool (20 June) via Melbourne, with on board apparel glassware, nails etc., and passengers, surgeon H.West. (there is a mix-up in the dates or there have been two ships under the name ANNA sailing in the same timeframe to Australia)

She cleared on 10 December 1852 for Bombay with on board lead-ore for Yonghusband & Co, one passenger, crew 30.

Log of Logs gives that she at least made one other voyage from England to Australia in 1855, she sailed from London or Liverpool on 22 September and arrived in Sydney on 24 January under command of Capt. Downward.

She is not more registered in Lloyds Register of 1862.
In the register of 1874 she appears again with a tonnage of 1.099 grt, dimensions 158.3 x 32.1 x 23.4ft.
Call sign L.W.H.S.
Owned by H. Barton, Liverpool.

Thereafter not more any information on the ship.
