The first ship of this class was laid down in June 1960 at the Zhdanov Shipyard. Launched in April 1961, she was completed in June 1962. She has a standard displacement of 4,800 tons; loaded 6,000 tons. Length (o.a.) is 492 ft., beam 57 ft., and draft 19 ft. and she carries a complement of 390. Propelling machinery consists of two sets of combined steam and gas turbines driving twin screws and developing 85,000 s.h.p. Speed is 35 knots. Four high-pressure boilers provide steam. Armament comprises four 3-in, twin-mounted guns; six 21.in. torpedo tubes (two triple mounted amidships). There are two Shaddock surface missiles, quadruple mounted, one forward and one aft. Anti aircraft missiles include one twin "Goa" launcher on the forecastle, and there are two 12-barrel rocket launchers on the forecastle for anti¬submarine purposes. There are two enclosed towers instead of masts, stepped forward of each raked funnel, and a helicopter landing apron on the stern.
