Amphion (Royal yacht)

Swedish Royal Yacht built 1778 F Chapman, Stockholm. D118x22'3"x8ft, Sail area 6338sq ft. Armed swivel and saluting guns. Compl 10. Built to orders of King Gustavlll for cruising on Lake Malaren and the Archipelago of Stockholm. Original rig schooner, could be rowed. Poor sailer on her maiden voyage. 1779 re-rigged as brigantine, but without much success. Used on ceremonial occassions. During war between Sweden and Russia 1788-30 served as Royal HQ Ship, receiving severe damage. Following the death of the King, transferred to the Navy gradually degraded until broken up 1883. Royal cabin and ornately carved stern preserved and erected in State Historic Museum.

The stamp shows the figurehead of the Swedish yacht AMPHION.
