Built 1852 Liverpool for Brazilian Navy. 1800tn. L56.9m. Steam engine of 350hp. Paddle wheels, 10knts. Arm four 32pdrs, two 70pdrs, swivel guns. Flagship of Admiral Barroso at Battle of Riachuelo. In the heat of battle he encouraged his men with a signal very nearly the same as Nelson used at Trafalgar “Brazil expects every man to do his duty”. On the stamp the AMAZONAS is flying “R-N”. She was decommissioned in 1893.
