The 16k. stamp shows the Kashin class destroyer Otvazhny, 4,300 tons standard displacement, 5,200 full load. Dimensions: length 470 ft. 9in., beam 52 ft. 5 in., draft 19 ft. Missile launchers: four (2 twin) SA-N-1 for surface to air missiles, Guns: four 3-in.(76 mm). two twin. Anti-submarine weapons: two 12-barrelled MBU forward; two 6-barrelled MBU aft. Torpedo tubes: five 21in. (533 mm.)quintuple amidships for ASW torpedoes.
This class were the first warships in the world to rely entirely on gas turbine propulsion giving them the quick get-away and accelleration necessary for modern tactics. They were delivered from 1962 onwards from the Nosenko Yard, at Nikolayev. Now the class is considered outdated by later classes as they have neither helicopter nor the special missiles provided in the later classes.

Built as a destroyer one of Project 61 under yard no 1704 by 61 Kommunare at Nikolaiev North for the Soviet Navy.
10 August 1963 laid down as OREL.
17 October 1964 launched as OTVAZHNYY (197). (OTVAZHNYY is the correct name.)
31 December 1965 commissioned.

She was based in the Black Sea.


On 31 August 1974, the Soviets Kashin-class destroyer OTVAZHNYY suffered an internal fire
while on maneuvers in the Black Sea. The blaze detonated the warship’s aft SA-N-1 SAM magazine. The force of the blast was so great that a large section of the vessel’s deck and superstructure in the aft amidships area of the hull was blown into a position vertical to the hull. After taking this catastrophic damage, the vessel sank stern first with the loss of 200 of its crew of about 280 officers and men.
