Aldeburgh Lifeboat

Post by shipstamps » Tue Oct 14, 2008 12:47 pm

Vessel on stamp was temporary replacement for the lifeboat ALDEBURGH, on service on the station that gave her that name from 1890 to 1899. This boat capsized on 7 Dec 1899 with the loss of seven of her crew of 18. Another crewman died later from results of the accident. The lifeboat was condemned and broken up in Feb 1900. A number of reserve boats served the station at Aldeburgh after the accident and the RNLI are of the opinion that the stamp designer has illustrated one of these 44’ by 13’3” temporary boats placed on the station in 1900. The name of this lifeboat not definitely known.
