LADY CHILEL JAWARA

Built under yard No 476 as a ferry by Ferguson Brothers Ltd., Port Glasgow for the Government of Gambia.
29 March 1978 launched under the name LADY CHILEL JAWARA named after the spouse of the at that time president of Gambia.
Tonnage 703 gross, dim. 45.80 x 9.63 x 2.93m.
Powered by diesel engines ?hp, twin screws speed 11 knots.
Could carry cargo, 44 cabin passengers and 200 deck passengers.
Building cost £1.5 million.
She carried also a post office on board.
She was a replacement for the LADY WRIGHT who ceased sailing in April 1977.

She was built for the River Gambia service for a weekly roundtrip from Basse to Banjul.
September 1987 left the yard for Gambia.
07 December 1984 with on board 25 European tourists and 73 Gambian deck passengers, she grounded and sank off Devil’s Point, Ballinghao some 70 miles from Banjul.
Three tourists and a young Gambian girl were drowned, while several other passengers were later admitted to a hospital 25 miles away.
