GALATEA 1896

This stamps issued by Republica de Guinea Ecuatorial in 1996 depict three ships, with only one with a given name the GALATEA, the other is a paddlesteamer and a fast ferry, are this two ships already identified.

Built under yard No 324 as a steel hulled barque by Anderson Rodger at Port Glasgow for Sterling & Co., (Glen Line) Glasgow.
03 December 1896 launched fully rigged, under the name GLENLEE.
Tonnage 1.613 gross, 1.490 net, dim. 245.65 x 38.9 x 22.5ft, draught 17.7ft.

13 December 1896 left the yard to load general cargo.
Sailed from Liverpool on Christmas 1896 bound for Portland, Oregon via Cape Horn on her maiden voyage.

March 1898 sold to Islamount Sailing Ship Company (Robert Ferguson & Co.), Dundee and renamed ISLAMOUNT.

1905 Sold to Flint Castle Ship Co. Ltd. (Richard Thomas & Co., Liverpool).

During the First World War taken over by the National Shipping Controller and managed by John Stewart & Co. Ltd., London.
October 1919 her last voyage under British flag was from Java, Dutch East Indies, with sugar for Cette, France. (today Séte).
She was then sold to Societa de Navigazione Stella de Italiano, Genoa,
By this owners two auxiliary engines were built in, renamed CLARASTELLA in 1920 with homeport Genoa, not sure of she made any voyage for this company.

29 March 1922 was she sold to the Spanish Government, before she was sold she was refitted as a naval training vessel by the yard of Cautieu Navale Triestino, Monfalcon (Trieste).
Renamed in GALATEA and based at La Grana naval base at Ferrol.
As GALATEA did she have a displacement of 2.700 ton, dim. 94.57 x 11.41 x 7.45m. Length bpp. 74.87m
Sail area 2.800 m³.
Armament of 4 – 6pdr. guns.
Powered by two auxiliary Polar diesels, 1.360 hp.
Accommodation when under sail for 75 men crew and 150 cadets.

Used by the Spanish navy for extensive ocean cruises.
From 1966 used as a stationary fully rigged schoolship at El Ferrol.

During the 1980s after drydocking she was towed to Seville with the plan to refit her in a marine museum, but the plan never materialized.
She sank along her remote quay due to vandalism, was later refloated by the Spanish Navy.

30 June 1992 sold during a public auction to the Clyde Maritime Trust, U.K. for 5 million Pesetas.
From 1 till 9 June towed the 1.380 mile from Spain to Greenock on the River Clyde, with on board a 3 men voluntary crew.
After arrival drydocked then towed to up the River Clyde to Glasgow where she berthed alongside the Yorkhill Quay for restoration, which commenced on 06 July 1993.
06 July 1993 was she again renamed GLENLEE by Lord Provost and the Spanish Consul General.

2006 She is now berthed and open for the public as museum ship in a new waterfront district in Glasgow.
