This stamp issued by the USA is to honour the American Merchant fleet during the Second World War.
The design is made after a composition drawing of two Liberty vessels unloading in Manila the JAMES MADISON and the JOHN W TROY.

Built under Hull No. 274 by Houston Shipbuilding Corp., Houston for the U.S. War Shipping Administration.
28 October 1942 laid down.
21 December 1942 launched under the name JAMES MADISON.
Tonnage 7.196 gross, 4.346 net, 10.865 dwt., dim. 441.6 x 57 x 37.4ft., draught 27.8ft.
Powered by a 3-cyl. triple expansion steam engine, manufactured by National Transit Company, Oil City, Pennsylvania, 2.500 hp., speed 11 knots, one propeller.
Daily fuel consumption 30 tons a day.
Cargo capacity 562.608 grain, 499.573 bale.
January 1943 delivered.

Managed by Lykes Bros.
After World War II placed in reserve at Suisun Bay, California.
May 1966 scrapped at Oakland, California.

Built under Hull No. 2581 by Oregon Shipbuilding Corp., Portland, Oregon for the US War Shipping Administration.
22 December 1943 laid down.
10 January 1944 launched under the name JOHN W TROY.
Details the same as above.
Engine manufactured by Iron Fireman Manufacturing Company, Portland, Oregon.
January 1944 delivered.

Managed by Alaska Steamship Co., Seatlle till 1946.
January 1947 sold to D.J. Dambasis, Athens, renamed ELENI D. Managed by Lemos Bros. Ltd., London.
1949 Sold to Alcyon Shipping Co. Ltd., Piraeus, not renamed, managed by Triton Shipping Inc., New York.
1961 Sold to Gulf Freighters Corp., Liberia, renamed OCEAN MARINER, first managed by Jason Steamship Co. Ltd., Montreal from 1963 by Norland Shipping & Trading Corp., New York.
1967 Sold to Japanese breakers and arrived at Sakai, Japan February 1967.
