ENDYMION HMS 1779

Built as a 5th Rate by Edward Greaves, Limehouse for the Royal navy.
02 February 1778 ordered.
18 March 1778 keel laid down.
28 August 1779 launched under the name HMS ENDYMION, named after the Greek hero Endymion.
Tonnage 893 (bm), dim. 140 x 38.1 x16.4ft, draught 14.2ft.
Armament: Lower deck 20 – 18pdrs., upper deck 22 – 12pds., forecastle 2 – 6pdrs.
Crew 300.
June 1779 completed, then to Woolwich were she was fitted out and coppered till 05 November 1779.
July 1779 commissioned.

Joined the White Division of the fleet commanded by Admiral Sir G.B. Rodney. Took part in the sea battles in the Caribbean between 9 and 12 April 1782 (Battle of the Saints).
1783 Paid off after the war.
Under repair at Woolwich from December 1783 till December 1784.
October 1783 recommissioned under command of Lieut. Joseph Sall.
February 1788 paid off.
1789 In use as a troopship under command of Daniel Woodriff.
20 August 1790 wrecked on uncharted rock off Turks Island which now bears her name, one man drowned.
