The ship on the stamp of 200s in the M.S. Victorias Navales with the inscription Victoria Naval de Iquique, 21 Mayo de 1879, must be the Peruvian battleship HUASCAR (foreground) and the sinking ship is the Chilean corvette EMERALD.

30 June 1852 her construction was authorized by a Supreme Decree, but not before 1854 the Chilean Congress authorized her construction.

Built by the yard of William and Henry Pitcher, Northfleet, County of Kent, U.K. for the Chilean Navy.
December 1854 keel laid down.
18 September 1855 launched under the name EMERALD (2) sponsored by Admiral Manuel Blanco Encalada and Mrs. Tránsito Yrarázabal de Guzmán.
Displacement 854 tons, length 130 x 32 x 18ft.
Powered by two horizontal steam engines, 200 ihp., four boilers, speed 8 knots. Retractable screw and telescope funnel.
Armament 20– 32pdrs. SML, 2 - 12lbs. guns
Wooden hulled, copper sheathed.
Crew 200.

She left the U.K. under command of Rear Admiral Roberto Winthrop Simpson and arrived at Valparaiso on 07 November 1856.
26 November 1865 under command of Capt. Juan Williams Robolledo she captured the Spanish vessel VIRJEN DE COVADONGA in the Battle of Papudo.

Between 1867 and 1868 her armament was changed to 12 – 40 pdrs. Armstrong RML guns and 4 – 40 pdrs. Withworth SML guns. Also new boilers placed and an evaporator fitted in.

Between 1870 and 1875 decommissioned.

24 May 1875 due to the weather she was beached in a creek at Valparaiso, in which her hull was damaged, the damage was repaired with Chilean oak wood.

1877 She made a voyage with cadets to Eastern Island and Tahiti.

During the Naval Battle of Iquique on 21 May 1879 was she sunk by the Peruvian battleship HUASCAR.
