The design shows a Norfolk Island whaling boat. These whaleboats were designed on the lines of the New Bedford whalers the islanders bought from the American whaling ship Andrew Hicks, which let them have her boats Black Billy and Hicks. The boat on the stamp is from a model of a whaleboat made in 1944 by Mr. M. T. Allen.
