Resolution HMS (1774) (Cook)

Post by shipstamps » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:20 am

Capt. James Cook discovered Norfolk Island on October 10, 1774, during his voyage of exploration in the Resolution. His journal recorded that "At daybreak as we were standing to the west an island was discovered bearing S.W. by S.". On the next day Cook and some officers went ashore: "We found no difficulty in landing behind some rocks. . . we found it uninhabited and were undoubtedly the first who ever set foot upon it".
The picture of the ship on the stamp has been taken from a painting of H.M.S. Resolution and Adventure in the Long Reach, 1772, by F. Holman, reproduced by permission of the Public Library of New South Wales.
The Resolution was built by a Mr. Fishburn, of Whitby, in 1769 for Capt. William Hammond of that port, and was purchased by the British Admiralty for £4,151 in 1771 expressly for Cook's second expedition. Originally named the Drake, she was a sturdy vessel of 462 tons. She was fitted out at Deptford as a sloop at a cost of £6,568 and renamed Resolution.
Structural alterations were made to her hull, and she was given 18 gun ports, although only 12 cannon were mounted. In company with a smaller ship, the Adventure, the Resolution sailed from Plymouth Sound on July 13, 1772, on Cook's first voyage in her, he having been appointed to the vessel on November 28, 1881. She was his flagship on the second and third voyages and he was her captain at the time of his death on February 14, 1779.
After the return of the Resolution to England in that year she was converted into an armed transport, under command of Lieut. R. F. Hassard and sent to the East Indies in 1781. While there she was captured on June 9, 1782, by the French corvette La Sylphide and taken in charge of a prize crew to the fleet of Admiral de Suffren, then operating in the Indian Ocean against the British forces of Admiral Hughes. De Suffren sent her to Manila for supplies, and she was not heard of for some time.
Ten years elapsed before she was seen by Sir John Borrow, of H.M.S. Lion, in Porto Praya, during his voyage to Cochin-China. The name of Cook's ship had been changed to La Liberte, and she purported to be a whaler, although Sir John expressed the opinion that in the company of three other vessels she had become engaged in smuggling activities.
"Out of respect to Cook's memory I would have laid her up in dock till she wasted away plank by plank", said Sir John. The final fate of the old Resolution is not known. Her dimensions were: length of gun deck 110 ft. 8 ins.; length of keel 93 ft. 6 ins.; beam 30 ft. 51/4 ins.; depth 13 ft.
Sea Breezes 10/67

The £5 stamp features James Cook and his vessel RESOLUTION . In the course of the voyage that made the first circumnavigation of Antarctica, Captain James Cook of the Royal Navy headed for land which had been reported 100 years earlier and so in 1775 he landed at Possession Bay. The crew hoped that they had discovered the continent of Antarctica but when they reached Cape Disappointment they realised they had found only a large island. Detailed descriptions of the island and its natural history were made and observations of numerous fur and elephant seals led to their exploitation by sealers. After leaving what he called 'the Isle of Georgia', Cook sailed south-east and discovered the South Sandwich Islands.

South Georgia is a mountainous, glaciated island in the South Atlantic. It has a rugged coastline and its highest peaks reach to over 2,935 m a.s.l., 8 % of the landmass is vegetated and there are numerous offshore islands and skerries. Each year more than 8,000 visitors come to the Territory, some enjoy short walks in the spectacular coastal scenery, others undertake ambitious expeditions into the islands interior, and all rely on accurate maps.
Detailed information about our surroundings is often taken for granted but it has taken nearly 250 years to accumulate such a thorough knowledge of the landscape. This information has been hard won and has a fascinating history.

Cook Map 1775 and HMS RESOLUTION
South Georgia was first sighted looming out of the stormy seas of the south Atlantic by a London merchant Anthony de la Roche in 1675. However, he did not brave a landing on the rocky shores and for a hundred years, the island remained untouched by humans. That all changed in 1775 when Captain James Cook and his ship HMS RESOLUTION circumnavigated the island and on January 17th, made the first landing at Possession Bay, raising the British flag and claiming it for King George III. This day is now celebrated as a public holiday on South Georgia. Cook produced the first map of South Georgia and gave names to a number of features which persist to this day including Bird Island and Cumberland Bay. He also named the southernmost tip of the island ‘Cape Disappointment’ as it was at this point he realised South Georgia was an island, rather than the great southern continent that he had been searching for.

Cook sailed across the South Indian Ocean in the RESOLUTION and DISCOVERY and confirmed the location of Desolation Island, later known as Kerguelen Island. Cook wrote of Christmas Harbour where he first anchored on 25th December 1776:
“I found the shore in a manner covered with Penguins and other birds and Seals…so fearless that we killed as ma(n)y as we chose for the sake of their fat or blubber to make Oil for our lamps and other uses… Here I display’d the British flag and named the harbour Christmas harbour as we entered it on that Festival”
(Cook, Journals III, i, 29-32)

Georg Forster, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Forster ... took part in James Cook's second trip around the world (1772-1775) together with his father Johann Reinhold Forster on board of the HMS RESOLUTION. He became the founder of the scientific-artistic travelogue. Father and son gave the two-volume work ‘J.R. Forster's Reise um die Welt ’in English and German language out (1778/79).

250th Anniversary of James Cook Crossing the Antarctic Circle

250 years ago, Captain James Cook commanded the first ship to venture south of the Antarctic Circle. Magyar Posta is issuing a special stamp in honour of the anniversary. Forty thousand copies of the new issue designed by the graphic artist Barnabás Baticz were produced by ANY Security Printing Company. The new issue will be available at first day post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 4 April 2023, but may also be ordered from Magyar Posta’s online store.

James Cook (Yorkshire, Marton, 27 October 1728 – Hawaii, 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer and captain in the Royal British Navy. His ship was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle in 1773.

On the second of his voyages, between 13 July 1772 and 29 July 1775, James Cook was the first to circumnavigate Antarctica with his ship RESOLUTION and finally refuted the existence of the hypothetical southern continent of Terra Australis. During this voyage, on 17 January 1773, he was the first captain to cross the Antarctic Circle. He explored the island of Niue, charting the known parts of the island and discovering new ones. He named the New Hebrides archipelago on 31 August 1774 and called the main island New Caledonia upon its discovery in September. Cook also discovered the nearby Isle of Pines, now L’Île des Pins. In honour of James Cook, botanists named the new species of tree found there Araucaria cookii. In the South Atlantic, he surveyed and named the islands of South Georgia and South Sandwich. On returning to England, he was promoted to Captain and elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

The stamp shows a portrait of James Cook in the foreground while the RESOLUTION and the outline of Antarctica are in the background. The main motif of the first day cover reproduces an engraving of the profile of James Cook. The imprint of the special postmark on the commemorative first day cover is a stylished drawing of the RESOLUTION.
