NYGGJABERG and SANNE

On 25 April 1949 British forces occupying the Faroes islands decreed that Faroese ships no longer were to sail under the flag of Denmark.
The Faroes issued a souvenir sheet on 09 April 1990 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this decree. The sheet includes two Faroese ships that were lost during the war, in which one-third of the fishing fleet was destroyed.

NUGGJABERG:

She was built as a steam side-trawler under yard No.344 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd. of Beverley, England for the Saint Andrew’s Steam Fishing Co., Ltd., Hull.
19 June 1916 launched under the name ST. HUBERT.
Tonnage 349 gross, 140 net, 311 dwt., dim. 42.67 x 7.31 x 3.96m.
Powered by one 3-cyl. triple expansion steam engine, manufactured by C.D. Holmes & Co, Hull, 82 nhp.
14 September 1916 completed.

1939 Sold to S.J.Ellefsen & M.J. Mortensen, Midvaag, Faroe Island, renamed NYGGJABERG.
07 March 1942 at 23.14 torpedoed by one torpedo fired by the U-701 under command of Capt. Horst Degen, she sank within two minutes with the loss of her full crew of 21, in a position approx. 62 36N 15 09 W underway from the fishing grounds off Iceland.

SANNE:

She was built as a wooden three-masted schooner by N.P.Petersen of Thuro, Denmark for her namesake C.V. Petersen of Svendborg.
Launched under the name C.V. PETERSEN.
Tonnage 231 grt., dim. 36.30 x 8.07 x 3.74m.
1912 Completed.

1931 Sold to A/S Markore of Vaag, Faroes, renamed SANNE.
The new owner installed an auxiliary 2-cyl engine, manufactured by A/S Gamma, Frederikshavn, Denmark, 25 nhp.
1933 Sold to N. Jacobsen, Toftir (Glibre Isle) Faroes.
In July 1942 she was attacked by a German plane and sunk north of the Faroes. The crew of 8 made it to shore in a lifeboat.
