BATANA local craft

Post by shipstamps » Fri Sep 26, 2008 11:27 pm

The fishermen of Piran often used rowing boats for fishing in the Gulf of Piran, the boats were called BATANA. http://www.shipsonstamps.org/Topics/html/marken0403.htm
The type was similar to the fishing boats used by most fishermen of the Adriatic Sea and know under different names.
The Slovenes living between Trieste and the Timava River in the Gulf of Trieste call it BETJEU, while the Italian names are BATELLA and BATÁNA.
As a keel-less flat bottomed plank boat, the BATANA is one of the simplest fishing vessels. It had a partly covered deck with underdeck storage and a covered stern section.
The boat was either propelled by a small trapezoidal sail on the mast or by two oars placed in the wooden oarlocks on a transverse beam.
The BATANA from Piran also shares some features with another similar but smaller rowboat known under the name SCIFA or BATELINA.
The BATANA was mainly the boat of poor fishermen.
The BATANA from Piran is a part of Slovenia’s fishing and maritime heritage.
Therefore, let this stamp design be a reminder to all those who are supposed to take care of it.

The book Aak to Zumbra, a dictionary of the World’s Watercraft gives.

She was flat bottomed, transversely planked, straight flaring sides; hard chines; 10 to 12 ribs.
Sharp raking stem; wide slightly raked transom stern, external sternpost.
Rowed with 2-4 oars against single tholepins.
Reported length 3 – 4 meter, beam ca. 1.5 meter, depth ca. 0.5 meter.

She is on Slovenia 2004 B
