VEGA (1)

Post by shipstamps » Fri Sep 26, 2008 11:11 pm

Two trainings vessels have been sailing under Russian flag under the name VEGA, the stamp gives VEGA (1) so she must be the first vessel under that name, also she has painted ports not much more seen after World War II.
The second was built in Finland and delivered to Russia as a training vessel in 1952, and is now in a dry-berth at Pietarsaari, Finland under restoration.
Both were barquentine rigged.

Not much I could find on the first VEGA, the info I found comes mostly from the Navicula Enzyklopadia Schiffe and Seefahrt der Maritimen Philately.

1901 Built as a wooden cargo vessel at Ainazi, Estonia under the name TAARA.
Between 1927 and 1928 refitted in a training vessel, and renamed VEGA.
Tonnage 498 tons, dim. 141.9 x 33.1ft.
Homeport Rostov-on-Don (Sea of Azov), Russia.
1942 After a bomb-strike sunk off Gelendzik, Black Sea.

She is on Russia 1981 6k sg 5168.
