Youth of Tortola

Post by shipstamps » Thu Sep 25, 2008 4:48 pm

I am informed by Mr. J. Mackay of the British Museum, whose main interest in philatelic ships lies in those built in Scotland, that the Youth of Tortola is depicted on the 12 cents current stamp of the Virgin Islands. She was built by James M. Miller and Sons, Ltd., at St. Monance, Fife—a circumstance which brought back memories to this Scot exiled in London, for James Miller built a cabin cruiser for the Army unit Mr. Mackay served with in the Outer Hebrides, and he and another comrade in arms sailed her from the railhead at Mallaig to South Uist.
The Youth of Tortola, which is on the ferry service between Tortola, in the Virgin Islands and St. Thomas, was built in 1957 and has an overall length of 65 ft. with a beam of 15 ft. 6 ins. She has two 210 h.p. General Motors engines which gave a speed on trials of 14'/2 knots.
