Tughril

Post by shipstamps » Wed Sep 24, 2008 3:31 pm

The destroyer Tughril is shown on the navy stamp of Pakistan's "Salute our Forces" issue. Formerly H.M.S. Onslaught, the stamp designer has obviously worked from an old photograph of this destroyer as the pennant number D204, shown on the vessel's bow, was changed in 1959 to F204 and again in 1963 to 261 (with no initial letter). The stamp also shows her with armament that is no longer carried.
The Onslaught was acquired from the Royal Navy in 1951. She was one of the destroyers built under the War Emergency Programme and was laid down on January 14, 1941 by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Govan, launched on October 9, 1941 and completed on June 19, 1942. Renamed Tughril when taken over by Pakistan, she has a standard displacement of 1,540 tons, fully loaded 2,625 tons. Her dimensions are: length 345 ft., beam 35 ft., draft 15'/2 ft. and main armament consists of four 4.7 in. guns. Anti-aircraft equipment is four 40 m.m. guns and she is fitted with eight 21 in. torpedo tubes. Complement is 150. A speed of 31 knots is provided by Parsons geared turbines developing 36,000 s.h.p. SG227 Sea Breezes 5/66

In 1957 the ship was converted for use as an Anti-Subrnarine Frigate and remained on the Active List until 1975. Two years later she was scrapped.
