Built as a battleship by Compagnie des Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée at La Seyne, France for the Imperial Russian Navy.
18 May 1899 keel laid down.
23 February 1901 launched under the name TSESAREVICH, she was named after the oldest son of the Tsar, and heir of the Russian throne. No sisterships.
Displacement 12.915 tons standard, 13380 ton full load. Dim. 122.2 x 23.2 x 8.5m. (draught).
Powered by Reciprocating Vertical Triple Expansion steam engines, 16.500 ihp, twin shafts, speed 18.5 knots.
Bunker capacity 1.350 ton coal.
Range: 5.500 mile by a speed of 10 knots.
Armament: 4 – 12 inch, 12 – 6 inch, 20 – 11pdr., 20 – 3pdr. and 4 – 15 inch torpedo tubes.
Carried 45 mines.
Crew 782.
August 1903 completed.

December 1903 assigned to the Far East, as flagship of Admiral Wilgelm Vitgeft.
09 February 1904 she was struck by a Japanese torpedo in the attack on Port Arthur (now Lüshin, China), the torpedo struck to far aft to test the torpedo bulkhead.

On the morning of 10 August 1904 the First Pacific Squadron left Port Arthur to engage the Japanese fleet blockading the port.
The Russian squadron consisted of the battleship TSESAREVICH, RETVIZAN, POBEDA, PERESVET, SEVASTOPOL and POLTAVA, along with four protected cruisers and 14 torpedo boats.
The Japanese fleet under command of Admiral Togo, consisted of the battleship MIKASE, ASAHI, FUJI and SHIKISHIMA, the armoured cruisers NISHIN and KASUGA, as well as eight protected cruisers, 18 destroyers and 30 torpedo boats.

By midday, the main body of the Japanese battleships attempted to block the Russian patch off the Shandong Peninsula.
13.00 The first shots were fired, and during the one-hour fight the Russians succeeded in breaking out of the harbour.
Admiral Togo began a long pursuit of the Russian fleet and gradually came up from the south-west slowly overtaking the Russian battle line.
At 16.20 the action resumed, with both sides trading artillery fire from ranges of 9.000 till 10.000 yard, both sides received damage.
At 18.00 with the battle’s outcome still in question. Admiral Vitgeft was killed by a shell splinter on the bridge of the TSESAREVICH, just 12 minutes later, further hits on the TSESAREVICH of which one hit the sighting slit of the command tower killing the Captain and almost all command personnel, jamming her helm.
The flagship fell out of the battle line, and the other Russian ships became disoriented. With darkness approaching and low ammunition, Togo broke off the engagement and retired eastward.
He ordered a night attack against the Russian fleet by his destroyers and torpedo boats, but most of these attacks were repelled with light casualties.

While most of the Russian fleet returned to the safety of Port Arthur, the damaged TSESAREVICH and three escorting destroyers sailed to Kiao-Chau where they were internet. She was otherwise not badly damaged.

At the end of the Russo-Japanese war, she returned to the Baltic and became a unit of the Baltic Fleet.
In December 1908 took also part in the rescue operation of the Russian training squadron at Messina.

17 October 1917 took part in the Battle of the Moon Sound, she was engaged by the powerful dreadnought KRONPRINZ, but she escaped with only two damaging hits.

1917 When taken over by the Soviet Union she was renamed in GRAZHDANIN. And hulked.
1923 Sold for scrap to Germany, broken up there in 1924.
