Built as a tank landing ship (LST) under yard no 365 by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Comp., San Diego, Calf. for the USA Navy.
15 July 1966 ordered.
28 September 1968 keel laid down.
12 July 1969 launched under the name USS CAYUGA (LST 1186), sponsored by Mrs. Luther C. Heinz, named after a county in New York. She was the third ship in the USA Navy to carry that name. One of the Newport –class tank landing ships.
Displacement 4.973 tons standard, 8.516 full load. Dim. 159.2 x 21.21 x 5.9m. (draught). Length over derrick arm 171.05m.
Powered by 6 16-cyl. ALCO 16-251E diesels, 16.500 hp. each shaft, twin shafts, speed 22 knots. Bow-thrusters of 800 hp.
Bunker capacity 1.750 tons.
Radius 14.250 miles by a speed of 14 knots.
Armament 4 – 3 inch guns, and 1 – 20mm Phalanx CIWS.
Crew 14 Officers, 210 crew and approximate 350 troops.
She has a flight deck of 242m²
08 August 1970 commissioned under command of Commander William T. Hollenbach.

After commissioning, she was assigned to the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, with home port Long Beach, Calf.
Her first voyage brought her to Vancouver, British Columbia and then to Astoria, Oregon, Fishing Festival.
31 October 1970 she completed her sea trials.
Her first deployment in the Western Pacific was in 1971 when she became the first vessel in her class to launch Amphibious Assault Vehicles at maximum speed and the first ship in the US Navy to conduct an extended dependent’s cruise.

24 May 1972 she landed Mariners in the Republic of South Vietnam during “Operation Song Than 6-73”. This operation made her the first in her class to participate in combat operations.

After completing a three month tour in Vietnam, the CAYUGA headed for the Philippines, where she helped in “Operation Saklolo” in the flood-ravished Pangasinan province.

23 May 1973 she brought relief supplies to the citizens of Nicaragua, whose capital of Managua was devastated by earthquakes, also she delivered medical supplies and three fire trucks.

September 1976 she became a film-star by serving as the stage for action scenes filmed at sea for the film “Airport 77” and ‘Grey Lady Down.”

January 1979 she made a patrol of the Western Caroline Trust Territory, visiting such remote islands as Paulau, Tobi, Pula Anna and Sonsorol to check on the condition of the native inhabitants.
During the spring of 1981 she rescued over eighty refugees from boats off the coast Thailand and Hong Kong.

November 1982 she conducted training operations with the navies of Somalia and Oman, and in the summer of 1985 with the navies of Korea and Thailand.

July 1987 her Western Pacific deployment was completed. Travelling nearly 37.000 miles, she operated from the coast of California to the Gulf of Thailand, and from the Aleutian Islands to the Coral Sea, while participating in joint and combined exercises with the navies of Thailand, the Republic of Korea and Australia.

26 August 1994 decommissioned.
3 November 1994 lend to the Brazilian Navy.
29 November 1994 she held the first joint exercise with the Brazilian Navy.
Thereafter took part in many exercises with the Brazilian Navy.
30 April 2000 took part in the Naval parade of the 500 Years of Discovery of Brazil.
24 January 2001 transferred to the Brazilian Navy and renamed MATTOSO MAIA (G 28).
28 May 2004 sailed from Rio de Janeiro bound for Port-au-Prince, Haiti where she arrived on 15 June as part of the United Nations Mission for Stabilisation of Haiti

2008 Still in service by the Brazilian Navy.
