Manhattan (label)

Post by shipstamps » Thu Sep 18, 2008 5:34 pm

An example of an advertising stamp is shown in this illustration, depicting the United States Lines' Manhattan, which was built and engined by the New York Shipbuilding Company and completed in 1932. She became the U.S. troopship Wakefield during the Second World War, and is a twin-screw vessel of 24,289 gross tons, 705ft. long overall, with a speed of 20 knots. Although an advertisement for a firm of paper makers, few collectors of ship stamps would hesitate to add this stamp to their collection as it is the only one to depict the liner Manhattan.
